Hobbies and activities

1-Questions and answers. To ask about someone’s hobbies or interests we can ask questions like:

What do you like doing?

What do you do in your free time?

What sort of hobbies do you have?

The reply to these questions can be:

In my free time I like watching films.

When I’ve got some spare time, I play computer games.

I’m interested in sports.

I’m really keen on drama. I want to be an actor.

I’m into music, I play the guitar in a band.

Remember that we use like + gerund (-ing) to talk about general likes ( I like swimming), and we use like + to-infinitive to talk about more specific likes ( I like to eat paella on Sundays).

2-What do you do in your free time? Have a look at this presentation and answer the questions in exercise 2:

3-Play, go or do? We use these three verbs when talking about sports and activities, it depends on the type of sport.

Play is used with ball sports and competitive games when we play against another person: We usually play football at school.

Go is used with activities ending  in -ing: I’m going skiing next month.

Do is used for a recreational activity or a non-team sport: She does judo.

4-Present Simple. We use this verb tense to talk about habits, routines and things in general. Let’s practise with this online test:

5-Time expressions. We usually use:

Unit 3, computer session 1st ESO

1.How much do you know about transport?

This is a taxicab, also taxi or cab. Where are these taxis from? The first one has the popular name of black cab, the second one, obviously, it’s a yellow cab. Have a guess. London or New York, New York or London? The yellow one is from NY and the other one is a London taxi. Motorised hackney cabs in the UK, traditionally all black in London and most major cities, have the popular name of black cabs, although other colours are often seen. Now use a search engine to find out where you can find red taxis in the world.
