Verbs + prepositions

These sentences will help you learn and remember these English verbs and the prepositions they come with.

Examples:

He was accused of murder and sent to prison. (charge someone of a crime)

I agree about the importance of public services.

We all agree on this political issue. (parties are in agreement on a certain topic)

They agreed to meet at six. (when you agree to do something)

I totally agree with you / your idea. (agree with someone/something someone has said)

He apologised for being late. (apologise for something)

He applied for the job but didn’t get it. (for+thing, position, loan, scholarship)

I’ve applied to several universities. (to + place/person)

We never argue about religion. (about/over + topic)

Don’t argue with me! You know I’m right. (with + someone)

What time are you arriving in Madrid? (city/country/big places)

He arrived at the station at eight o’clock. (small places, celebrations: at the wedding)

I’d like to begin with the first point.

I do not belong to any political party. (to be owned by someone/something)

Nobody seems to care about what is happening here.

Have you climbed up the hill behind your house? (also “clim up the social ladder”)

She’s always complaining about her lazy students. (someone/something, dissatisfaction)

She complains of the pain she has in her back. (symptoms, suffering from)

The test is going to consist of more than 20 questions.

I still depend on my parents.

In this test, each answer depends on the previous one.

My dad died of a heart attack.

Several interesting things emerged from the report. (come forth from)

I’d like to enquire about the progress made. (ask about someone/something)

We all have to fight for freedom and peace.

Most people enjoy gossiping about celebrities’ lives. (talk maliciously about…)

Have you heard about the new smoking ban? (receive information)

I haven’t heard from her for a long time. (from + someone)

I have never heard of that composer. (have knowledge of)

Farmers insist on higher wages.

Despite the boss complaints, he insisted on doing things his way. (demand something)

I’d like to introduce you to my wife. (make someone acquainted by someone else)

He invited me to have lunch with him.

You can always lean on me. (rely on for support)

Lean on me if you get tired. (rest one’s weight on)

Do not lean out of the window please. (bent or tilt one’s body outwards)

The main office referred me to this department. (direct someone to someone/something)

I can rely on (upon) you to do a good job. (trust in someone/something)

Please remind her about the meeting (cause someone to remember somone /something)

Mum, remind me to call the dentist. (remind someone to do something)

You remind me of an old student. (bring a memory of someone/sth into someone’s mind)

Just some flowers to remind you of me.

She started working at 12, she was robbed of her youth. (deprive someone of something)

The police searched the suspect for hidden weapons.

Some Spanish dishes smell of garlic.

Stop staring at me! (look fixedly at someone/something)

If you do not behave yourlsef you’ll stay at home.

You should stay at something until you finish it. (to keep working at something)

I don’t want to talk about this anymore. (talk about something/someone)

Talk to me, I want your opinion. (speak)

Could I talk with you about our children? (hold a discussion)

She always thinks about her children first. (have on one’s mind)

You have to consider all options. Think about it! (think about is usually a longer action)

I thought of my old friend Jenna and immediately called her. (remembered)

What a good idea. I didn’t think of it (the thought had not come to me)

He thinks of himself as a brilliant student. (regards himself as)

I’m coming! Please wait for me!

She said goodbye and walked away. (also walk off, go away from)

She’s writing a book about Spain.
