This is what I’ve done this year after the Christmas holiday, we all know that the first lesson after a holiday break is always a pain. Children come back from their holidays and are not used to working and they do not feel like studying, so this is a good way to start. Why not do something different instead of opening the school book? This lesson plan is called “New Year’s Resolutions and Predictions for…2010“.
-We can start talking about New Year’s Resolutions (What are they? What are the most popular ones? Do they know what are their parents’ resolutions?…). Then they can start writing their own resolutions (Here we can introduce the use of “be going to” for plans and intentions). Other suggestions are doing a webquest to find out what the most popular resolutions are and watching a video on “how to stick to your resolutions”. See http://pepamut.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/4th-eso-unit-4/
-To introduce “predictions” what I do is to give them some examples first. Let’s see, why not predict something as: “they will invent a robot for doing the homework”, “Your local team will win the European Football Cup”, “By the end of the year crisis in Spain will be over”. Try to make them think about current news on TV or local news which they are familiar to. Why not think about funny predictions? Imagination and creativity can help here. Then, we can make a class list with all our predictions.
