Family and Friends

This is the first post for my “Anglés Pràctic” students this year. Thank you for joining the group and welcome to this course. I know you have studied English for many years but I see you feel embarrassed when you speak in English, or you have trouble understanding and communicating with native speakers. Let’s start working on that! After having worked on the unit “Family and friends” I wanted you to revise the new idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs studied, so I prepared this presentation. Have a look! The unit test will be on Wednesday 6th, good luck!

Mr. Bean goes shopping

I used this video to introduce the use of some modal verbs such as  “must ” for obligation, “mustn’t” for prohibition, and “should/shouldn’t”  for giving advice. It was also very useful to revise “shopping vocabulary”. First we all enjoyed watching it and then, I told them to work in groups of 4/5 people. Each group had to discuss and work on one of these assignaments:

1-Rules: imagine you are the owner of the shopping centre. Make a list of rules all customers have to follow. Use “must”.

2-Prohibition: now, after watching Mr. Bean while shopping, you have to write a sign saying what must be forbidden. Use: mustn’t.

3-Giving advice: imagine you are a mother/father, your son/daughter is going shopping to “La Marina shopping centre”. You have to give your children some shopping advice before going shopping. Use: “should/shouldn’t”.

4-Dialogue: Mr. Bean has finally decided to buy something and to speak. Write a shopping dialogue between Mr. Bean and a shopping assistant with any item that has appeared in the video.

Job interviews

Interviewing for a job is something that needs to be prepared beforehand, and if you are doing it in another language that needs more preparation. First impressions are important. Remember to introduce yourself, shake hands and smile. You should use simple but polite language. Here you’ll find some useful interviewee phrases:

I attended the University of…

I graduated with a degree in…

I’m currently working at…

I worked as a … for … years

I’m currently doing a course in…

I can speak English fluently and have a basic knowledge of French.

I have a lot of experience dealing with…

I’m a very organized / efficient / adaptable … person

I’ve always wanted the opportunity to work with…

Now watch these 2 videos, take some notes and do the activities on the worksheet:

Restaurant phrases and vocabulary

An English Breakfast

British people have three main meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner (sometimes called “supper”). On Sundays the main meal of the day is often eaten at midday instead of in the evening. This meal usually is a Roast Dinner consisting of a roast meat, yorkshire pudding and two or three kinds of vegetables.

Nowadays, a typical English breakfast is a bowl of cereals, a slice of toast, orange juice and a cup of coffee, although most people around the world seem to think that a typical English breakfast consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, fried bread, mushrooms and baked beans all washed down with a cup of coffee. The traditional English breakfast consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, fried bread, baked beans and mushrooms. Even though not many people will eat this for breakfast today, it is always served in hotels and guest houses around Britain.
